Titanium nitride (TiN)
Titanium nitride is a hard, tough PVD coating that can also reduce friction and works in applications where chemical solvents are used, which is why titanium tool coatings are so popular. Applications for TiN coatings include cutting and punching tools, rotating shank tools, machining, and molds/dies. TiN is biocompatible and nontoxic, lending itself to use on medical devices and surgical tools as well as in food processing. Its familiar bright-gold color is popular with consumers.
Titanium carbonitride (TiCN)
Like TiN, TiCN coating adds durability to parts and products. It also offers excellent abrasive wear resistance. Its gray to rose gold color and performance properties mean titanium carbonitride is an excellent choice for cutting and punching tools, dies for plastic injection molding, and high-pressure, low-speed machining. Titanium tool coatings are ideal for drilling and reaming applications, with good adhesion, toughness, and chipping resistance. This titanium coating is often used for machining non-ferrous materials.
Titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN)
TiAlN has high hardness and excellent wear resistance for cutting tools and drilling and milling of high-strength steels.
