Titanium Coatings (TiN and TiCN) Coatings for Metal Fabrication Tools & More

Titanium coatings applied using our VaporTech® PVD systems add performance characteristics (and a metallic gold color) to parts and products.

Titanium is one of the top 10 elements found on earth (as titanium oxide). PVD titanium coatings—including titanium nitride (TiN) and titanium carbonitride (TiCN)—add hardness, wear resistance, other functional properties, and distinctive colors to parts and products.

Titanium nitride (TiN)

Titanium nitride is a hard, tough coating that can also reduce friction and works in applications where chemical solvents are used, which is why titanium tool coatings are so popular. Applications for TiN coatings include cutting and punching tools, rotating shank tools, machining, and molds/dies. TiN is biocompatible and nontoxic, lending itself to use on medical devices and surgical tools as well as in food processing. Its familiar bright-gold color is popular with consumers.

Titanium carbonitride (TiCN)

Like TiN, TiCN coating adds durability to parts and products. It also offers excellent abrasive wear resistance. Its  gray to rose gold color and performance properties mean TiCN is an excellent choice for cutting and punching tools, dies for plastic injection molding, and high-pressure, low-speed machining. Titanium carbonitride coating is ideal for drilling and reaming applications, with good adhesion, toughness, and chipping resistance. This coating is often used for machining non-ferrous materials.
